Facing the Music

?He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things. And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.?
Ephesians 4:10-12

Music is everywhere. We can hardly ever be in any kind of public setting where music is not present. Go to any sporting event and watch any movie and T.V. show and music is playing. What is it about music that is so appealing to humans? Why is it always in the background when it is not in the foreground? Music is supernatural. How else can we explain how even a tribe of people from the most remote, darkest jungle of South America or Africa will have some sort of music? This has been proven over and over again in modern times. Geographical expeditions have found people who have never had any contact with the outside world, and they will have music. Not only will they have music at the core of their culture, they will also worship after a god or gods, and most certainly, their music will be an intrinsic part of their worship. How do we as Christians deal with the realm of music to be sure that we are properly administering to the people of God? In Ephesians 4:11, we are given five fundamental ministering offices that are given by our Lord Himself, to grow the Body of Christ. Music is not listed as one of these services. Nowhere in the New Testament do we see any examples of salvation being attained through any mechanism that stems from music outside of individuals singing praises that were helpful in convicting souls. The music is never a primary tool utilized to bring someone to salvation and to keep them in salvation. For that we must depend on the Word of God alone.

So first, do we know where music stems from?

Ezekiel 28:12-18 gives us a past tense presentation of Satan who was once Lucifer.  Verse 13 mentions his tabrets (tambourines) and his pipes (voice or singing).  This clearly gives us picture of a being that had musical capabilities.  I believe that Lucifer was created this way by God and that he in a sense, he WAS music.  If we then look at Isaiah 14:12-14 we see the only place in the Bible where the word Lucifer is used.  The translation of the word “Lucifer” is “morning star”. We should get a picture of a being that did have a purpose of covering the throne of the Most High God with brightness because of all of the jewels and illuminating, showing forth or reflecting the glory of God.  Another picture of this wonder is given by Peter when he talks about the day star arising in our hearts.  The emphasis about Lucifer’s brightness should be seen in the actual Hebrew word that was translated as “lucifer”.  The word is heylel (Strong’s # 1966), which comes from the root word halal (Strong’s # 1984) which means to radiate or shine forth praise.  His name was Heyl-El (Praise of God).  It is where we get the word hallelujah which means “Praise You – The Lord”.  We can see the similarity in the naming of these persons in two other powerful archangels, Gabri-El (valiant warrior of God) and Micha-El (who is like God).  It is also worthy to note that the Bible refers to angels as “sons of God”.  Heyl-El no doubt had a special place in the Lord’s heart – and how our Father must have hurt to see him fall as he hurt for the other fallen angels (son’s of God) and especially so when Adam (who was the son of God) and his entire lineage fell into the curse of rebellion and separation from God Almighty. All of these beings, angels and men, were created in the image of the eternal God the Son - Jesus Christ - and truly our Father grieves to see us in rebellion.

Now if we have an anointed powerful spirit being that was full of praise and musical abilities that we can not even comprehend, and he fell into a state of insane hatred for God and all He created, what kind of vile wickedness could this being be capable of perpetrating on the Adamic race and just how deceitful and alluring would this wickedness be?  After all, Paul tells us that we shouldn’t be surprised at this in 2nd Corinthians 11:11-15, and here it is happening and the church is as blind as bats. The Old Testament gives another startling account of what kind of influence music will have on people in Daniel chapter 3. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had an image made of himself and he demanded that the people worship his image.  Now remember that Babylon was known for occult practices of magicians, astrologers, sorcerers.  What was the primary mechanism used to get the people to bow down before the image of the king of Babylon?  It was the music!  When the people hear all sorts of music that is the command for the people to fall down (to lay prostrate) and worship the devil.  It is absolutely no different today than those thousands of years ago.  What we really need to take a hard look at and ask ourselves is: what is the spiritual root of the music that is being presented forth from Christians today?  It is my belief that the majority of Christians are in an worldly, soulish and demonic realm with regards to the kind of music that they produce and listen to today - these last days.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.

Can the word “sound” in verse 18 be thought of in a musical sense?  Perhaps, but if anything, it is certainly in the context of the herald or proclaimer of the Word being rooted and grounded in praise to the Lord and speaking forth the truth in a “clear voice”. This is confirmed in the fact that Paul is quoting from Psalm 19:4 where it is said: “Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun”.  Some will say that the word “line” here in the Psalm is correlated to the word “sound” used in Romans 10:18. The logic is that the Hebrew word for “line” (Strong’s # 6957) can be used to signify a musical measure, string or accord, thus the word “sound” applies in a musical sense.  Looking at the numerous other uses of the word “line” in the Old Testament does not give much evidence of any musical connotations, but really speaks to us of a carpenter’s plumb line or a measuring line in order to attain to balance and spiritual discernment.  This leads us to Colossians 3:16 which does tell us: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”.  This is where we truly must be wise and apply the balance and careful measurement of discernment in order to rightly divide the Word of God.  He truly does say to teach and admonish one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs singing with grace in our hearts to the Lord.  Therefore we can not be concrete by saying that music can not be used to grow a Christian. What we must accept and walk in agreement in is that the music can not be defiled and that what we do with the music must be in sync with the Holy Spirit, otherwise it will corrupt – no matter how much we “think” otherwise.  A good example of how music applies to deliverance and glory to God is the picture of David casting a demon spirit out of Saul using his harp in1st Samuel 16:23. Because David was under the anointing of God he was able to drive away the unclean spirit in Saul.  We must be empowered by the Holy Ghost in the same way in order to drive off the unclean spirits that defile the human soul in order that the person can take hold of the hand of grace that is being extended to them and then allow the Word of God to soak into them in order to transform their minds to be spiritual instead of carnal.

The Bible tells us that Judah plows the field (Hosea 10:11). The root word for Judah is yadah (Strong’s # 3034) which also means praise.  This tells us that praise plows the field.  Before the word can be sown the field must first be plowed.  If the field has been improperly prepared and cared for or the seed has been mixed with a defiling element than what grows (if there is any growth) will be unclean.  It will be unholy and unacceptable in the sight of the Lord God.  We must be very careful that we are not being deceived because of idolatry.  We sometimes tend to put the horse before the cart.  We think we can draw people by appealing to their senses with music but it is the Spirit of God that draws men (John 12:31-32).

Leviticus 19:19 gives us commands about mixing with two different types.  In one example he tells us of mixing or breeding livestock.  In real life if you mix a horse with a donkey it will produce a mule.  As a result of this mixing the mule will be sterile and WILL NOT be able to reproduce another mule.  So God is showing us in a practical, real life example that we can not expect to engender life from mixing two unlike things.  We can not be mixing our teaching with any unclean thing (2nd Corinthians 6:14-18). God is not just talking about us not doing the sinful activities of carousing, reveling, fornicating etc?He is desiring us to put away anything that remotely had to do with that old lifestyle. Instead we carry forth the trappings of that old lifestyle, rather than separating from the very nature of it.

Let?s start to take a visual look at the current musical presentations being made. Here are a few images that are commonly associated with satanic influences:

Take note in the following videos and judge for yourself if this is the right spirit for a Christian to walk in. Why the long hair when the Bible says it?s shameful for a man to have long hair? Why do so many Christian musicians have body piercing and tattoos? Why the screaming and maniacal jumping around and hand signs?

The first videos film maker’s website consists of other videos that would be considered “non-Christian”.  It is worthy to note that, although the statistics do not bear huge numbers, the video about “Christian Rock” generates substantially less “views” than the non-Christian videos.  That tells me that generally speaking, the world is not drawn to Christianity presented with a Rock and Roll format.  The devil has preformatted the world to have a disdain of Christianity in many respects because of the obvious – Christianity is truth (the devil knows this) and humans are rebels (the devil knows this too) – but also because the devil has cleverly made Christianity a joke as far as the overall presentation of the “church” is concerned.  Hypocrisy is rampant and the “church” has mixed the world into itself and the world knows it!  What draws men and women for real is the Spirit of God and a demonstration of power, not the things of this world.  People are tired of the world and they need something new!

Atlanta Fest 2007 – sponsored by “Christian” radio stations.  There is enough sampling of “Christian” music in the Atlanta market for me to know that it is no different in any other major city in America.  The music they play in most cases really does not glorify God. It focuses on the here and now rather than heavenly things and it is especially evident when you hear the radio personalities themselves and the things that they talk about.  The entire enviroment of Christian radio is this way. Their job (as commanded by their king) is to keep people tuned into the things of this life.  That’s why they talk about the movies and the sporting events and the American Idol etc.  It stinks and God hates it!
 This video features a Newsboys song “Wherever We Go”, presumably singing about what goes on wherever a Christian goes to “proclaim the Gospel”.  They sing of the natural realm – birds singing, flower blooming, squirrels smiling.  They sing that “we’re throwing a party and wherever we go is where the party is at”.  Where does that come from?!?

This Acquire the Fire video mentions Maze Ministries.  Now most people would probably first associate a maze as something that confuses, confounds and traps. The definition of maze is: Stupefy, daze, bewilder, perplex.  Miriam-Webster’s on-line dictionary defines STUPEFY this way: to make stupid, groggy, or insensible…I am not making this up nor am I trying to be funny. Look at this Maze Ministry.  It is centered on two magicians Jim Munroe and Tennyson McCarty.
According to their website: “MAZE uses astonishing illusion, multi-media, relational campaigns, and apologetics to illuminate the truth of Christ to university students and the unchurched. MAZE constructs a mysterious, engaging experience that draws audiences into the world of illusion. Unlike a typical magic show, MAZE develops every element of their presentation with the purpose of changing lives. Their primary target audience is the college campus where spirituality is embraced but morality mocked. In addition, MAZE has engaged churches, parachurch organizations, high schools, and conferences. MAZE has found that the medium of illusion launches audiences into a state of questioning, much like those who watched the ministry of Jesus.”
“MAZE uses illusion to break down barriers with audiences. MAZE knows the perception that magic has as a black art. MAZE is not dabbling in the occult. Quite the opposite, MAZE wants to bring truth through revealing how deception has crept into the lives of people everywhere.” (bold emphasis mine - and let me emphasize here that the devil is a liar). These folks are not going to “change the world”, they are merging with the world!

The Call would seem to have its priorities in order when they talk about the people of God coming together in prayer and fasting.  But why do they need the state of Tennessee to sign off on their endeavors?  Why is there so much emphasis put on America and the flag?  How is this scriptural?  Where does the Bible say anything about Jesus Christ or His disciples getting the Roman state to sign off on their activities?  The coming revival and harvest of souls is NOT going to be stimulated by a “music revolution”…that is a LIE!  The coming revival and harvest is going to be stimulated by the preaching of the true Gospel of Jesus Christ followed by miracles, signs and wonders of the Holy Ghost as a demonstration of God’s power, not an emotional gathering of idolaters who are being led by their carnal senses.  These people are being drawn by the flesh and not the Spirit (John 3:6, John 6:63, Romans 8:5, Galatians 6:8). The revival that so many think they are waiting for is going to result in a bloodbath because the world despises Jesus Christ and when the two embodiments of the Christ and the anti-Christ clash at the end of this age it will be just as it was in the first days of the church. Remember that narrow is the way to life and broad the way to destruction. The majority will despise the manifest presence of God. Are you prepared for this “revival”? If you are in the flesh this will not be desirable to you and you will reject it.

All this amounts to is ministry that is producing a bunch of clones trying to induce some sort of cultural change. It is obvious in this ABC Nightline interview. They are a bunch of Lou Engle clones, that?s just the truth of the matter. Instead of proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ which simply says: Repent, and be saved because God?s wrath is about to be poured out. Instead, their message is one of trying to change the world or “changing history” or to make the world a better place. The world just looks at these Christians as if they are clowns. You can see this clearly in reporter?s attitude.

In a series of DVD presentations, EX Ministries takes an in-depth look at the spiritual roots of our modern music.  If we truly desire truth then we should easily see that this music is not from God.  It is rooted in Egyptian and Eastern mysticism.  Even in the way some of these people look (Isaiah 3:9) it is evident that they have taken on another spirit and it is that spirit that they are speaking and singing forth.  One of the most evident signs of another spirit is being projected through Hip Hop, Rap (and don’t think that Rap is not closely intertwined with Hip Hop) and Rock & Roll via Rastafarianism.

What is interesting about P.O.D is that they themselves do not consider themselves to be a “Christian” band, but a “spiritual” band. If that is the case, why do Christians claim that P.O.D. is “Christian”? This defies logic.

The television ministry called Steel Roots is under the influence of the same demonic spell casting.  Their logo is “God, Sports. Music”.  They will say “God first”, but God says “you shall worship no other god” (Exodus 34:11-16).  How can we glorify God if we, being made in His image, are to be acting and looking like fools and under the influence of demon spirits? How can anyone actually think that God can be pleased with me if I’m sitting here proclaiming the Gospel with my lips and eyebrows pierced, having some demonic tattoo on my backside and my pants are all torn up and slung down below my rear end?  This ministry is from the loins of The Inspiration Network which has tremendous scope through a growing worldwide satellite television audience. The apple does not fall far from the tree.

You have the very same thing with the ministry that is run by Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker’s son Jay called ?Revolution? which has branches in New York, Charlotte and Atlanta. He presented himself to the world in a documentary ?reality-show? called ?One Punk Under God?. This is all a crying shame. These people need help from heaven and if the sleeping church does not wake up from its coma, how will they and the ones following them be saved?

In the Bible we see extensive use of the terminology witchcraft, divination and sorcery.  In Acts chapter 8 we see a depiction of a man called Simon who was a sorcerer. In this account the Greek word used to describe Simon is mageuw (mageuo) which is where we get the word for magic or magician. In Revelation 9:21 the word used for “sorceries” is the Greek word farmakeia from which we get the words “pharmacy” and “pharmaceutical”.  Sorcery through magic, illusion, fantasy and drugs is being used to put spells on people’s minds and captivate and ultimately brainwash them into believing in something that is not.  Most of the musicians that have captivated our generation since the 1960’s have been heavy drug users. I was a teenager in the 1970’s.  At that time, I didn’t listen to music that was 30 years old.  I listened exclusively to the music of that time.  Did you ever stop to think as to why kids today would be inclined to listen to music that is 30 years old?  There must be some kind of hook, some kind of force that is able to draw them to it.  There is a force – it is witchcraft.

The music was created and delivered with the use of mind altering drugs.  It is easy to see how musicians today, especially this new breed of young “Christian” musicians are under the influence of farmakeia. This is a spiritual war people! Many of them may have actually done drugs in their past (like many people born between 1950 and 1970).  Conversely, many of them have never done drugs before but how do you explain the airy attitudes that they have?  How do you explain how a person in their early to mid twenties can hardly put together a cohesive sentence without stammering and stuttering and having their dialog interspersed with “I mean, like um, you know, like I mean…it’s like, kinda sorta like when yer tryin’ to serve God an’ stuff…you know how like, I mean…”?  It is confusion is what it is!  It’s a mind that has been turned into a babbling brook – even if the person has not actually physically partaken of the drugs!  This is a spiritual invasion and Satan is coming through the music to steal, kill and destroy.  These sorcerers must be confronted and disempowered. The church must be under the proper headship of the Lord Jesus Christ and individual vessels made fit for God, through repentance of sins and sanctification from the world unto holiness so that He can pour His Holy Spirit through us in order to take on the task at hand.

The solution is seen in Acts 8:17-23. We need the Holy Ghost!  Peter just flat out told the sorcerer “your heart is not right in the sight of God”.  Now most Christians today will adamantly tell you that only God can judge the heart.  If that’s true than how can the Bible contain Acts chapter 8 verse 21?!?  The reason they say that is because they are under the influence of witchcraft and sorcery.  The Bible says that he that is spiritual judges all things. But the “church” under the influence of witchcraft says “you can’t judge!”.  Why does this force seem to be billowing forth from the church with no sign of abatement?  It is because we have not truly denied ourselves unto death so that the Holy Ghost can rest on us.  The Holy Spirit of God will only rest on the personage of the real Jesus Christ.  If we are not being made into His image we will disallow the Holy Spirit from operating through us.  This is what is wrong with the church.  It has been mingled with Satan’s seed Genesis 3:15 and self is being presented rather than selflessness which is really the essence of God’s nature.

It Starts at the Foundation

This message is primarily focused on the danger of using music as an outreach and like all of our bondages and afflictions we must get to the root of the problem.  We’ve been spending too much time on the branches and the organism continues to grow.  The church must come to the realization that if the shepherd (root) is out of order then the sheep (branches) will be out of order.  Even though so much can be said on this topic, we must realize that the pulpit is ultimately responsible for the spiritual growth of the people.  If the headship (foundation – Ephesians 2:18-22) is not under the proper authority of Jesus then what condition will we - the body - really be in?  Even the pulpit has allowed the world to be mixed in. 

Billy Graham was given a “star” on the Hollywood “walk of fame” in 1989 and was quoted as saying:
"`I'm not sure a clergyman belongs in that group of entertainers,' Graham said sheepishly, noting that his star will be near those honoring Wayne Newton, Buster Crabbe, John Travolta, Judy Holliday, Julie Andrews, Olivia Newton-John and Greta Garbo. ... `A star was offered to me 30 years ago,' he said, `and I said, No then. But I've changed my views.'"

People all over the world actually think that Billy Graham is a “minister” of God.  Yet the world gives accolades to this “Christian”.  A shrine or temple of worship (AKA a “museum”) was recently dedicated in honor of Billy Graham.  The major American television network nightly news broadcasts were remote in Charlotte for the dedication. What does Jesus say about such matters? How can anyone who preaches the Gospel even put the word “Reverend” in front of their name when the Bible says “Holy and reverend is HIS name” (Psalms 111:9), let alone be accepting honors from the world?  Why is my name and my face plastered all over my publications if I’m preaching a message that speaks against self promotion yet STILL, unable to see because of the haze of witchcraft that obscures the cross of Jesus Christ and death to the nature of “self”.  This filth continually spews from the “church”. The church leaders have some rudiment of Lucifer’s “I want to be somebody, somebody please look at me” mentality and it is being propagated to and through the people of the congregations.  This is not an exposition to say “look at these evildoers” and to rail forth on and on about what is wrong with “them”, but it is an exposition to say that we must wake up, repent and change!  A lot of these ministries talk about a revolution and change…let’s get going in the right direction!  The revolution should be directed against the kingdom of Satan and against the nature that he has engendered into humans for thousands of years.  The Bible says that the heart of a person is deceitful and desperately wicked (Jeremiah 17:9-10). This does not so much say that our heart is deceived, but that our own hearts deceive us and that we can not trust our own hearts.  Even if (and when) we think we are on the right track, we’ve got to continually examine ourselves (1st Corinthians 11:26-32, 2nd Corinthians 13:5) to see if we have rudiments of the world inside of us – because what is inside of us will come out (Mark 7:15). The Gospel should be brought forth with plainness and without a presentation that stimulates the senses.  This generation is being taken over with the realm of the senses – especially the realm of sight.  We as Christians need to take a hard look at our visual and audio presentations to see if the world is being put forth.  We are not acting according to the dictates of the Bible if we present ourselves with any kind of psychedelic, herky-jerky and bewildering type of display.  All we have to do is to look at the world of advertisement.  The commercials we see always have some sort of visually stimulating aura of fantasy and mesmerizing visual illusions with strange and erratic musical rhythms.  How can disciples of Jesus Christ follow that lead?  These musicians really just want to be “rock stars”.  They are filled with the same selfish desire as their father Satan.  It’s evil starting on the stage.  They want to be famous, they like being famous and they accept the worship of their “fans” and the “fans” are wicked because they are worshiping false gods.  Everyone thinks they are serving the true and living God and it is all evil!  This deception is so deep and dark that it is scary to think about how much damage has been done to our minds but we must come to terms with the fact that this is radical and extreme transformation that needs to take place in the Body of Christ.  There is too much compromise in the Body of Christ and leaders take an attitude of “well, hopefully the Lord will show them”, all the while the Lord is looking for someone to stand in the gap – AND SAY SOMETHING!  It terrifies me to think of facing the Lord Jesus and to have to hear Him say to me…”why didn’t you say something?”.  I’m saying it…and it’s not my responsibility or burden to see that someone changes…I’m just supposed to tell it.  If God does a supernatural work through me to heal or change someone, then Praise the Lord!

How can light fellowship with darkness?
Jesus clearly teaches that Satan can not cast out Satan (Matthew 12:26, Mark 3:23, Luke 11:18).  If we are trying to do the will of God using music as a mechanism to draw people to truth yet we do not understand the roots of where the music comes from then we are deceived.  The “revival” of the church is not about reviving the earth or embarking on some kind of “Cultural Revolution”, while still adhering to the things of the culture we are supposedly rebelling against. Revival is about resurrecting God’s people from the dead so that they can bring forth life to a dying planet.  That life is Jesus Christ.  How can this be done by a people that are still clinging to some form of the corruption and death?  The world and the things of the world are corrupt and this can not be altered or changed.  The defiling elements of the world must be eliminated (John 14:30-31). If we really love the Lord and we really desire to be obedient to Him, how can we have any kind of affinity for the world or the things of the world? (1st John 2:15).  Let us stop being foolish (Galatians 3:1).  To continue on believing that we can minister as the Body of Christ using sorcery is so completely insane that it there are not human words enough to describe it.  The bottom line is this: Christianity today collectively consists of individuals who have their own image of God in their minds rather than the image of God as He has given us through His Son, Jesus Christ and from the pages of the Bible.  We tend to want God to conform to our ways instead of it being the other way around.  So if I idolize music or the fact that “I am a musician” then I will automatically think that God is going to sign off on the image that is in my own mind, which has been fostered by my desires alone – not His.  We will come up with some excuse to not agree with what He tells us in the Bible instead of conforming to Him and obeying his commands.

Our only option is to repent of our sins of omission and commission, hear and obey the Word of the Lord and seek after Him and be filled with the Holy Ghost so that we can bring forth the end of this evil age and be with the Lord.

“And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not,
And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;
Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.
Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;
(For the LORD thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.”
Deuteronomy 6:10-15
